Italy DID win the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Sigh sigh...
And it's such a pity for Zidane to retire with his last match earning him a RED CARD. Poor guy... Even Figo and Oliver Kahn are retiring with slightly more glory than him. Michkoh: stop being so mean to Zidane and give him a break.
And for those Italy fans out there: STOP GLOATING. Like I've always believed, penalty-kicks are based on luck and it's only because Italy had more luck than France yesterday that they won. C'mon, no one really expected France to advance so far (maybe into the quater-finals and that's it...), and for them to go so far, especially after their poor showing in the preliminaries/ qualifying rounds, is already a great achievement.
Therefore
CONGRATULATIONS to Italy for winning. They've played really well despite the domestic soccer scandels that have besetted them (mafia, fixed matches, etc).
But let's also clap for France and remember how they too had to overcome their own personal differences (which apparently was a HUGE problem that caused a lot of disunity between the players) and a low public opinion.
After all, the purpose of the World Cup is to bring people together, much better than the United Nations ever can.
Hence, my two favorite pictures of the entire match are
Zindane embracing Figo, and Kahn hugging Figo, despite Portugal's losses to both France and Germany.
Now THAT'S the real spirit of the World Cup.
Sigh.. now that the World Cup is over, as usual I'm experiencing a bit of withdrawal symptoms. I can't wait for the 2010 one!
